LINCOLN, Neb. -- Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth indoor track team made their debut at the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this afternoon at the University of Nebraska's Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Senior Zachary Switaj (Tamworth, N.H.) competed in the mile, while classmate Matthew Hinthorne (Braintree, Mass.) raced in the 800-meter run.
Switaj was the fifth runner in his heat and 13th overall to cross the finish line, posting a time of four minutes, 17.89 seconds. The top-three runners in each heat, in addition to the next four fastest athletes earned a spot in the finals tomorrow afternoon. Wisconsin La Crosse senior Jacob Peterson secured the 10th and final spot in the finals with a time of four minutes, 13.71 seconds.
Hinthorne covered the 800-meter run in a time of one minute, 53.68 seconds to finish 12th overall in the 15-person field. The top-two from each heat advanced to the finals followed by the next four fastest times. Keene State College senior Ryan Widzgowski edged Wisconsin Eau Claire's Adam Moline for the eighth and final position.
UMass Dartmouth freshman Kevin Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) will compete in the high jump event at 11 a.m on Saturday, March 15. The NCAA has provided two multimedia options for fans to follow all the action from Lincoln, watching the live video broadcast or viewing the live results.
