NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's track and field team placed second at its annual Corsair Classic this afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Track & Field Complex.
The Corsairs won three events and finished second in five others to compile 105 total points. Bridgewater State captured the team title with 121 points, while UMass Dartmouth finished second in the 22-team field. Colby College (89), Bentley University (73) and Worcester State University (55) rounded out the top-five squads.
Sophomore Brandon Jarousky (Attleboro, Mass.) led the Corsairs with a pair of top-2 finishes in two sprinting events. He was the first runner to cross the finish line in the 400-meter dash, winning the event with a time of 50.43 seconds. Jarousky also placed second in the 200-meter dash, when he tripped the timer at 22.45 seconds.
Senior Matthew Hinthorne (Braintree, Mass.) gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-2 finish in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 50.47 seconds. Classmate Zachary Switaj (Tamworth, N.H.) was edged by Babson junior Mark Gulesian (15:26.87) at the tape to place second in the 5,000-meter run (15:26.88).
Sophomore Michael Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) stood atop the podium in the 10,000-meter run, winning the event with a time of 32 minutes, 42.70 seconds. Senior Brett Croteau (Rehoboth, Mass.) won the javelin event with a New England Open qualifying mark of 58.29 meters (191-03).
Junior Adam Jones (Amesbury, Mass.) accounted for 16 total points with a pair of second place finishes. Jones cleared 1.93 meters (6-04.00) to place second in the high jump, while covering 12.97 meters (42-06.75) in the triple jump. Freshman Kevin Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) scored six team points with a third place performance in the high jump, eclipsing 1.88 meters (6-02.00).
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Saturday, April 12, when the Corsairs travel to Westfield State.
