WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's outdoor track and field team completed the three-day New England Open Championships this afternoon, highlighted by senior Matt Hinthorne's (Braintree, Mass.) record-breaking performance in the 800-meter run.
For the second straight week, Hinthorne set a new standard in the 800-meter run. The senior led the race for the first 700 meters before crossing the finish line with a fourth-place time of one minute, 50.58 seconds, lowering his previous mark by 2.29 seconds from last week at the Division III New England Championships (1:52.87). Hinthorne is currently ranked third in Division III, according to the latest rankings published by DirectAthletics.
UMass Dartmouth registered a combined 10 team points as junior Adam Jones (Amesbury, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) placed third and fourth, respectively. Jones cleared 2.05 meters (6-08.75) to post his best leap since competing at the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, while Cutler registered a leap of 2.00 meters (6-06.75).
Senior Zach Switaj (Tamworth, N.H.) closed out his career in a Corsair uniform with a 26th place performance in the 1,500-meter run (4:00.52).
UMass Dartmouth will return to action between May 15-16, when the Corsairs compete at the Eastern College Athletic Championships (ECAC) in Troy, N.Y.
