DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's track and field program took five event wins on Saturday, as the Corsairs continued the outdoor season at the non-scoring 2016 Corsair Classic, the first home event of the year.
Five different Corsairs were event champions, and several others garnered top-five finishes to lead the team. Junior Greg Betsold (Turners Falls, Mass.) won the hammer throw, tossing 47.5m and added a third-place finish in the discus, heaving a mark of 38.02m.
He was followed closely in the discus by freshman John Edward Sagun (Brockton, Mass.), who placed fourth at 35.02m. Sophomore Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) finished right behind Betsold in second in the hammer, throwing 47.50m and also secured second place in the shot put at 13.74m.
In the running events, senior Michael Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) took first in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the line in 32:43.39. In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Michael Tierney (Norton, Mass.) bested the field of eight with the only sub-minute time, finishing in 57.56. Junior Sean Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) tripped the timer at 10:06.99 to claim the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Corsairs earned a 1-2 finish in the javelin, with freshman Stephen Tencati (Clinton, Mass.) and sophomore John Kleczkowski (North Attleboro, Mass.) taking the top spots, respectively. Tencati turned in a distance of 56.94m, while Kleczkowski tossed 50.22m.
Sophomore Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.) was the top collegiate finisher in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 11.35 while also gathering fifth place in the 400-meter dash in 52.28.
Rounding out top-five finishes were freshman Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) with a fourth-place time of 4:15.55 in the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Tyree Gorham (Brockton, Mass.) in fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:01.83, senior Adam Jones (Amesbury, Mass.) placed second in the triple jump at 12.80m and freshman Ben Rounseville (Rochester, Mass.) in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.52.
UMass Dartmouth will compete next Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by AIC in Springfield, Mass.
