NAPERVILLE, Ill. –University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) competed in his first-career NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship meet hosted by North Central College on Friday, culminating his indoor season with a 12th place finish in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run.
Papoulis, the only freshman in the field, timed in at 1:55.79 to take seventh in the first of two heats. After coming out quick from the gun, he fell behind after the first turn cut-in and was not able to make up the distance needed to gather one of the top eight times required to advance to Saturday's final. Topping the preliminary field was Ohio Northern's Matt Molinaro, who paces the field at 1:51.84 heading into Saturday.
During his first season as a Corsair, Papoulis surpassed no shortage of milestones. He became the New England Alliance champion in the 600-meter run on Feb. 11, timing in at 1:20.87 to not only set the school record but the meet and Southern Maine facility records in the process. In four different events, including the 400, 500, 600 and 800, Papoulis ranks in the top five in program history after just nine meets.
The starting gun for the NCAA Championship heat of the 800-meter run will sound on Saturday at 3:25 p.m.
