PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's track and field team took a pair of weekly-awards for consecutive weeks, as senior thrower Jared Louf-Woods collected the Little East Conference's (LEC) Field Athlete of the Week while freshman Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) earned his second-consecutive Track Rookie of the Week award.

The Blue and Gold track teams had a successful weekend as it hosted the Corsair Classic on the campus of UMass Dartmouth. Both the men's and women's teams finished in the top-two for the event with Louf-Woods and Pires contributing to the 14 first-place finishes with individual victories on the men's side.

Pires led the pack in his only race of the weekend as he finished with a time of 9:35.11 in the 3000-meter steeplechase. With that time, he not only finished 15 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor, but he broke the Cape Verdean national record in the event during his first time running it. The freshman is currently ranked 28 in the steeplechase and 19 in the 800-meter with his current season-best time of 1:55.

Louf-Woods continues to impress in the Div. III throwing-circuit as made evident by his performance this past weekend. The senior took individual victories in the shot put and the hammer throw to help the team toward its second-place finish. In the hammer, he dominated the field as his toss of 62.01m (203-05) surpassed the field by more than 75 feet. He rolled that into the shot put where he logged a distance of 15.77m (51-09) to comfortably claim the top spot.

On the season, the indoor All-American ranks amongst the top-ten in both of his events, placing ninth in the shot while holding the number one ranking in the hammer throw the school-record he set last weekend at Bryant University's Black & Gold Invitational.

UMass Dartmouth men's track and field team were recently ranked a program-best 16 in the nation according to the U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's week one outdoor rankings list. The team returns to action this Saturday at Westfield State's Jerry Gravel Invitational.
