Corsairs Third at Springfield Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field men's and women's teams set a pair of school records while they both finished third in five-team fields at the Springfield Invitational at the New Field House Saturday.
The men scored 78 points. Coast Guard was first with 186 points. The women scored 88 points. Host Springfield won with 219 points.
For the women, sophomore Jermai Harrison (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) finished first in the shot put and broke the school record with a throw of 39 feet, eight inches. On the men's side, senior Tyler Buck (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center HS) broke the school record at 600 meters when he finished first in 1:24.88.
Other women's highlights included sophomore Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) winning the 55 meter hurdles in 9.15 seconds after her time in the trials, 8.99 seconds, qualified her for the ECAC Championships. Junior Jess Carpenter (Rutland, MA/Wachusett HS) was first at 800 meters in 2:33.12, freshman Kristina Lundquist (Yarmouthport, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) was second in the 55 meter hurdles in 9.29 seconds and third in the long jump at 15 feet, 8 ¼ inches. Freshman Alison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) was fifth in the hurdles in 9.l5 seconds and fourth in the long jump at 15-1 1/2, freshman Patience Noah (Framingham, MA/Keefe Tech) was second in the triple jump at 34-2 ¼, freshman Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was third in the shot put at 35-7 ¼ and senior Hilary Baker (Middleborough, MA/Middleborough HS) fifth at 35-4 ½, sophomore Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was fifth at 55 meters in 8.08 seconds and`freshman Stacey Dybel (Littleton, MA/Notre Dame HS) finished fifth at 3000 meters in 12:26.88.
For the men, sophomore Nick Deininger (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) was first in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.30 seconds, sophomore Marcus Williams (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) was third in 8.33 and sophomore Jeff Beal (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) fourth at 8.34. Graduate student Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) won the 3000 meters in 9:09.19, while junior Derek Stevens (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott HS) was second in 9:11.28 and junior Tim Whelan (Abington, MA/Abington HS) fifth in 9:17.72. Sophomore Kevin Markie (North Attleboro, MA/Nichols) was second in the triple jump at 43 feet, 10 inches, Williams was fifth in the long jump at 20 feet, nine inches, sophomore Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was third at 800 meters in 2:02.11 and fifth in the mile at 4:34.23, and the 4 x 200 meter relay team of senior Jimmy Knuuttila (Lunenburg, MA/Lunenburg HS), Markie, junior Corey Sleep (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) and freshman Gerald Arneaux (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) was second in 1:35.51.
"I think we maximized our points," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We weren't in every event, but we have some depth in some events and we made a really good showing in those areas, We are continuing to move upwards and compete with some of the better Division III teams in New England."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to Wheaton next Saturday.
UMASS DARTMOUTH TRACK AND FIELD
