BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's indoor track and field team broke a pair of school records on the first day of action at the two-day Open New England Championships at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center Friday.

His time of 2:29.65 broke the school record and allowed him to qualify for Saturday's finals. Sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) qualified for the finals at 500 meters, breaking the school record in the process with a time of 1:04.99.
Sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) also ran the 500 meters. His time of 1:05.86 was the third fastest time in school history, although he did not qualify for the finals. Junior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) threw the 35 pound weight 48 feet, 4 ¾ inches and did not qualify for the finals.
"I'm very happy with our performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "I couldn't have been happier with our runners; breaking two school records and having Kyle finish within one second of qualifying for the finals as well."
The meet will conclude Saturday.
