Track Team Turns in Record-Breaking Performance at Open New Englands

BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's distance medley relay team turned in a record-breaking performance on the first day of competition at the Open New England Championships at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center Friday evening.

The team of sophomore Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) , freshman Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS), senior Tyler Buck (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center HS) and junior Tim Whelan (Abington, MA/Abington HS) broke the school record with a time of 10:24.31 while finishing 11th of 18 teams. Nygaard led off and ran 1200 meters in 3:09.3, Arneaud ran 400 meters in 49.8 seconds, Buck covered 800 meters in 1:57.4, and Whelan completed the anchor leg of 1600 meters in 4:27.9.

"Our relay team did a great job," said Assistant Coach Jon Hird. "We beat several Division I and Division II schools. Our relay team came in focused on running fast and they were on a mission, and they ran very well."

The meet will conclude Saturday.
