BRIDGEWATER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team turned in several strong performances when they opened their 2010 season at the Bridgewater Invitational at the Edward C. Swenson Athletic Complex Saturday. No team scores were recorded at the meet.
The women's 4 z 100 meter relay team of sophomore Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS), sophomore Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS), sophomore Shannon Singletary (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and senior Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional HS) finished first in 52.90 seconds. Van Ness also finished fourth at 100 meters in 12.81 seconds, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships with the fifth best time at UMass Dartmouth, and was fourth at 200 meters in 27.41 seconds. Singletary was fifth at 100 meters in 13.24 seconds.
Junior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was second in the hammer throw at 122 feet, seven inches, the fourth best throw at UMD. She was also sixth in the shot put at 34-2. Sophomore Jamie Zizza (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was third in the pole vault at eight feet, and fifth in the high jump at four feet, nine inches. Freshman Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional HS) was third in the long jump at 15-2, and fourth in the triple jump at 33-5, the eighth best mark at UMass Dartmouth. Sophomore Kim Urena (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS) was third in the 400 in 1:03.49, senior Ulrike Schonemund (Langgoon, Germany) was third in the high jump at 4-9, junior Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was fourth at 5000 meters in 19.44 seconds, junior Meagan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was fifth at 1500 meters in 5:00.80, and junior Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was sixth in the javelin at 109-7.
For the men, sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) finished first in the 400 meter hurdles in 59.85 seconds. Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was second at 800 meters in 1:59.87, freshman Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was second in the javelin at 185 feet, 10 inches, the fifth best throw at UMD, which qualified him for the Division III New England Championships. He also finished third in the discus at 125-11.
Freshman Brett Croteau (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) was third in the javelin at 181-5, the seventh best mark at UMD. Senior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) was second at 5000 meters in 15.36, freshman Chris Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was third in the shot put at 46 feet, the fifth best mark at UMD, senior Jeff Beal (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) was third in the 110 meter hurdles in 16.95 seconds, senior Wes Meserve (Merrimac, MA/Pentucket Regional HS) was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 11:05.00, and freshman Cody Gibney (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Regional Vo Tech HS) was fourth in 11:10.00.
"It was a good start, considering the weather," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It was 30 degrees when the meet started, and it affected everyone. Joe Texeira and Chris Cole got off to good starts, as did Brittany Cole in the hammer and Jillian Van Ness in the 100. Nick Santoro did a nice job in the 5000. We need to keep working hard during the next few weeks."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Bryant Invitational next Saturday.
UMASS DARTMOUTH TRACK AND FIELD
