NEW LONDON, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team continues to improve.
The Corsairs performed well in their final tune-up for next week's conference championships, as the men finished second and the women were third at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College's Silfen Track Saturday.
The men's team scored 140 points and finished 13 points behind Coast Guard in an 11-team field. The women scored 91 points. Worcester State finished first with 152 points, and Connecticut College was second with 103.
Among the highlights for the Corsairs included junior Linee Mello-Frost's (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) second consecutive record-breaking performance. Mello-Frost broke the school record in the 100 meter hurdles once again when she finished first in 15.34 seconds. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Mello-Frost, freshman Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS), freshman Shannon Singletary (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and junior Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) also broke a school record when they finished first in 50.87 seconds.
Sophomore Caitlin McGarigal (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Pelham Regional HS) also finished first, winning the 5000 meter run in 18:57.50, the 10th fastest time in school history. Sophomore Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was second in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet, 8 3/4 inches, while freshman Jamie Zizza (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was second in the high jump. Sophomore Kristina Lundquist (Yarmouthport, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) was third in the long jump at 15 feet, 3 3/4 inches, while Singletary was third at 200 meters in 27.18 seconds, the ninth best time at UMD. She was also fifth at 100 meters in 13.10 seconds. Cole was fourth in the hammer throw at 114 feet, five inches, the fourth best mark in school history, while sophomore Stacey Dybel (Littleton, MA/Notre Dame HS) was fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 13:14.32, and sophomore Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was fourth in the javelin at 103-8. Senior Jess Carpenter (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) was 5th at 800 meters in 2:32.77, Zizza was fifth in the pole vault at seven feet, 9 1/4 inches, and freshman Meredith Drake (South Deerfield, MA/Frontier Regional HS) was seventh at 7-3 1/4.
For the men, junior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) finished first at 800 meters in 1:58.95, junior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) was first at 5000 meters in 15:50.96, and John Bettencourt won the javelin competition with a toss of 157 feet, three inches. Two relay teams also were victorious. The 4 x 100 meter team of sophomore Brendan Wilson (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth HS/Cape Cod CC), senior Corey Sleep (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS), junior Kevin Markie (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS/Nichols) and sophomore Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) won in 44.41 seconds, while the 4 x 800 meter relay team of senior Matt Lemanski (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS), freshman Matt Ford (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS), senior Tim Whelan (Abington, MA/Abington HS) and freshman Scott Connolly (Sharon, MA/Sharon HS) finished first in 8:22.86. Lemanski was also fourth at 800 meters in 1:59.38.
Lamisere was second at 100 meters in 11.24 seconds, the eighth best mark at UMD. Sleep was fourth in 11.34 seconds, and Wilson eighth in 11.63. Sophomore Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was second in the shot put at 43 feet, nine inches and fourth in the hammer at 141-4, the eighth best mark at UMD. In the 110 meter hurdles, junior Jeff Beal (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) was second in 16.21 seconds and qualified for the Division III New England Championships, sophomore Brian McArdle (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) was third in 16.27 seconds and junior Nick Deininger (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) fourth in 16.56. Deininger was also third in javelin at 148 feet, eight inches. Junior Steve Burke (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) was third in the steeplechase in 10:18.06, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Nicolay Kolev, freshman Jesse Perrin (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS), freshman Kaylion Miranda (Brighton, MA/O'Bryant HS) and junior Brian Hopkins (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional HS) was third in 3:32.39, Hopkins was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.97 seconds, Perrin fourth at 400 meters in 52.23 seconds, and Miranda fourth in the long jump at 21-3 1/2. Freshman Jake Nichols (Wareham, MA/Hamilton-Wenham HS) was sixth at 200 meters in 23.43 seconds, while sophomore Steve Kent (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was sixth in the shot put at 40 feet, 1 1.4 inches.
"I was quite pleased with our performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "Prior to last week, I was concerned about how we were progressing. We turned the corner and we now have had two solid weeks with good performances. We're going into next week's conference meet with a positive attitude, and with confidence. We're pleased with what we've done the last couple of weeks, and we're looking forward to next week."
The Corsairs will return to action when they host the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Outdoor Championships next Saturday.
