Final Stats

FITCHBURG, MA-Both of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field teams finished second in the Little East Conference championships and seventh at the New England Alliance Championships at Michael P. Riccards Field at the Elliot Athletic Complex Saturday.

The men were second of six teams in the LEC with 60 points and seventh of 11 teams in the Alliance with 109 points. The women were second of six LEC teams with 64 points and seventh of 10 Alliance teams with 64 points. The second place LEC finishes equaled the best ever for both teams.

Women's Alliance champs included freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS), first in the shot put at 40 feet 7 ½ inches, and Kim Urena (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS), first at 400 meters in 59.36 seconds. Masse's mark was a school and Alliance record, while Urena set a school mark and qualified for both the Open New England and ECAC Championships. Freshman Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) was first in the LEC and fourth in the Alliance at 100 meters in 12.91 seconds, while sophomore Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was first in the LEC and fourth in the Alliance at 200 meters in 26.93 seconds.

In the shot put, junior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/ Dartmouth HS) was second in the LEC and third in the Alliance in the shot put at 36-10, and third in the LEC and seventh in the Alliance in the hammer at 116-9. In the javelin, junior Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional HS) was sixth in the Alliance and third in the LEC at 112-9. At 400 meters, junior Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was seventh at 19:10.46.At 800 meters, junior Meagan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was second in a school record time of 2:19.04. The Corsairs took the top three places in the LEC at 100 meters, with sophomore Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) second in the LEC and sixth in the Alliance in 12.92 seconds and sophomore Shannon Singletary (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) third in the LEC and eighth in the Alliance in 13.03 seconds. In the triple jump, freshman Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional HS) was seventh at 34-3, qualifying her for the New England Division III Championships with the eighth best mark in school history. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of senior Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), Van Ness, Singletary and senior Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson regional HS) was fourth in the Alliance and second in the LEC in 51.38 seconds, while the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Bohigian, sophomore Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS), freshman Caitlin Dorr (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) and Urena was seventh in 4:19.35.

For the men, senior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) was the Alliance and LEC champ at 5000 meters in 15:59.33. In the javelin, freshman Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was first in the LEC and second in the Alliance at 183 feet, eight inches, while sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/ Vermont) was first in the LEC and third overall in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.23 seconds. In the javelin, freshman Brett Croteau (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) was sixth in the Alliance and third in the LEC at 171-7. In the discus, freshman Conway King (Boston, MA/O'Bryant HS) was third overall and second in the LEC at 144 feet, seven inches, the seventh best mark at UMD. In the hammer throw, junior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was third at 153 feet, one inch, the third best mark ever at UMD, which qualified him for the New England Division III Championships. Freshman Marcus Cusick (Westport, MA/Diman Regional HS) was fourth in the Alliance and third in the LEC at 400 meters in 49.73 seconds, the third best mark ever at UMass Dartmouth, which qualified him for the ECAC Championships. At 1500 meters, senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was third in the Alliance and second in the LEC in 3:57.40, the fifth best mark at UMD, which qualified him for the ECACs. Senior Jeff Beal (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) was eighth in the Alliance and second in the LEC at 110 meter hurdles in 17.43 seconds, and seventh overall and third in the LEC at 400 meter hurdles in 59.84 seconds. The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Costa, sophomore Scott Connolly (Sharon, MA/Sharon HS), sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/ Braintree HS) and Cusick was fourth in 3:28.58.

"We're really pleased with finishing second in the Little East in both men and women, which is equals the best finish ever for both teams," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "Our team really gave a great effort, we had some outstanding performances and we are pleased with their effort. We want to thank our seniors, Briley Morrill and Linee Mello-Frost on the women's side and Jeff Beal, Eric Nygaard and Steve Burke (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) on the men's side, who competed for us for four years."
