NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference for their performances at Saturday's Springfield Invitational.
Senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was named LEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was named LEC Rookie Men's Track Athlete of the Week, and freshman Adam Jones (Amesbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was named LEC Rookie Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Yarbough finished second in the weight throw with a throw of 54 feet, 4 1/4 inches, and was fifth in the shot put at 45-1 1/2. Gondre tied for first at 60 meters in 7.08 seconds, was second in the long jump at 21-11 1/2, and was a member of the 4 x 200 meter relay team that finished first in a school record time of 1:33.74. Jones finished first in the high jump with a school record of 6-6 1/4. He also finished sixth in the triple jump at 43-7 1/4.
"Robert Yarbough has been one of our most consistent workers during the four years he's been here," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He's a leader, he's a co-captain, he's a hard worker, and he's been rewarded as he is ranked in the top 15 in the nation. We expect him to continue to improve. The times that Phito has put up on a weekly basis are certainly impressive for a freshman. He's currently ranked third in the country in the 60 meter dash. Phito is one of the top sprinters in New England in all divisions. Adam is having a great freshman year; he's really taken off since we came back from spring break. Saturday, he cleared 6-6 1/4 and was very close at 6-7 1/2. Right now, he is in a nice groove, as he has confidence and has pretty solid technique, and has put that together."
The Corsairs will return to action at Boston University next Saturday.
