NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) has been named LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, and freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was named LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. It was the second consecutive week that both student-athletes have been so honored. The awards were based on their performances at last weekend's Springfield Invitational.
At 800 meters, Nygaard finished second in 1:57.85, just one-hundredth of a second way from first place. His time was the third best ever recorded at UMass Dartmouth indoors, and it allowed him to qualify for the Division III New England Championships.
Perry won the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, four inches, placed third in the long jump at 21 feet, nine inches, and was fourth in the 55 meter dash in 6.67 seconds, which qualified him for the Division III New England Championships. He also led off the 4 x 200 meter relay, which finished first in 1:34.11. At the meet, he personally scored 18 points, and contributed to 10 more.
"Eric had an outstanding race Saturday at Springfield," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He just seems to be in a zone, where each week is close to a personal best, if not a personal best. Chris is an extremely versatile young man who is having a great start to his collegiate career, winning this award in each of the first two weeks he has competed at UMass Dartmouth."
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Boston University this weekend. .
