NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Four members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference for their performances at last weekend's New England Division III Championships.
Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was named Little East Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week. Freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was named LEC Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, while freshman Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) was named LEC Women's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
In the 800 meter run, Nygaard finished second in 1:55.81, breaking the school record as he was edged at the finish by two hundredths of a second. Perry finished first in the triple jump, breaking his own school record with a leap of 48 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Masse was third in the shot put at 40 feet, 6 3/4 inches, while Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) was sixth in the 55 meter dash in 7.44 seconds, and also ran the anchor leg on the 4 x 200 meter relay team that set a school record when they finished eighth in 1:49.59.
"Eric Nygaard is having a spectacular senior year and his performance on Saturday ranks as one of his finest races of the year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "Each week he seems to be getting better. Assistant Coach Jon Hird and Eric seem to be in a groove together this winter season. Chris Perry is having a phenomenal freshman year and adding the New England Division III triple jump title to his resume is certainly a wonderful accomplishment. He and Eric helped lead UMass Dartmouth to its best finish at the New England Division III' Championships in almost 20 years. Ezra Banks has consistently run in the 7.4's all season long and to place in the dash as a freshman at the New England Division III Championships is an accomplishment that we at UMass Dartmouth are very proud of. Jessica Masse has been a regular recipient of the LEC Freshman Field Event Rookie of the Week all season long. She established herself in December as a dominant force in the shot put and has continued to rank among the top throwers in Division III in New England all season long."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Open New England Division Championships this weekend.
