Corsairs Bestow Copious Awards at Annual Banquet

(Dartmouth, MA) - More than 200 awards for achievement in both academics and intercollegiate athletics were presented at the 44th annual UMass Dartmouth Athletic Awards Banquet held Monday night, May 10 at White's of Westport
Presentation of the 2010 UMass Dartmouth Senior-Scholar Athlete Award was the highlight of the event. Seniors Colleen Allen (Gloucester, MA) and Tim Whelan (Abington, MA) shared the award, presented each year to a senior student-athlete who has demonstrated the highest level of success in both academic and athletic achievement.
In four seasons with the Corsairs, Whelan earned a total of 12 varsity letters in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. An accounting major with a minor in Finance, Whelan has reached the Chancellor's List (3.8 GPA or higher) in six consecutive semesters with four perfect semesters of 4.0. He has been a tutor in the campus Math and Business Center and has been named to the ECAC All Academic Team. Whelan was captain for both the indoor and outdoor track and field teams this season. He was also a member of the school record-setting indoor distance medley relay team while also qualifying for the New England Div. III Indoor regional meet in the 1,000 meters.
Allen earned four varsity letters with the Corsair women' lacrosse team, serving as team captain during her junior and senior seasons. As a junior, she was honored by ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA as Academic All-District, a national honor recognizing athletic and academic accomplishments. Allen is a physics major with a perfect seven for seven in Chancellor's List honors. She was named a Commonwealth Scholar at last weeks' Honors Convocation. Last summer she completed a National Science Foundation-funded International Research Experience for Students in Sweden. After graduating from UMass Dartmouth later this month, Allen will pursue her Masters Degree in Medical Physics at Duke University.
Sophomore Alex Klepadlo (Bernardston, MA) was UMass Dartmouth's recipient of the Male ECAC Robbins Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2009-10. A sophomore marketing major with a perfect 4.0 heading into his fourth semester, Klepadlo has been a three-time Chancellor's list honoree as well as having received a Chancellor Academic Award Scholarship for his first two years on campus. He received the Richard J. Ward Book Award for the highest achievement as an underclassman for the 2009-10 academic year. He has already earned a pair of varsity letters with the UMass Dartmouth men's basketball team and was a Little East Conference All-Academic selection this past season.
Senior Christina DiStefano (West Newbury, MA) was UMass Dartmouth's Female ECAC Robbins Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2009-10. A senior mathematics major, DiStefano has earned Chancellor's List distinction in each of the three semesters she has been at UMass Dartmouth. In addition to a perfect 4.0 GPA, she was also an important member of the UMass Dartmouth cheerleading team. In two seasons with Coach Scott Bouchard's squad, she was a member of a national championship squad as a junior and a member of this year's second-place team.
The annual John Frye Athletic Service Award was presented to Jeff Augustine, Director of Campus Services at UMass Dartmouth. Presented annually to acknowledge support and service to the Athletic Department, Augustine was honored for his many years of cooperation and support for the student-athletes and programs on campus.
In addition to awards presented to Corsair student-athletes, several UMass Dartmouth coaches were honored at the annual awards banquet. Little East Conference Coach of the Year awards were presented to Henry Almeida (men's soccer), Nicole Castonguay (field hockey) and Tom Mendell (men's tennis). Volleyball coach Steve DeRossi accepted an LEC Sportsmanship Award on behalf of his team, while Scott Bouchard was honored for his team's 2009 National Cheerleading Association All-Girl Division III national championship. Women's swim coach Cathy Motta accepted a College Swim Coaches Association of America Div. III Team Scholar All-American Award for her team's academic accomplishment during the Fall of 2009. Diving Coach Danielle Petrone was honored for receiving the Charles Batterman Award as Diving Coach of the Year from the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association.
UMass Dartmouth student Carlos Aguileira was presented with the Bill Gathright Intramural Service Award for his efforts on behalf of the intramural programs at UMass Dartmouth.
