Oct. 30, 2010
PAXTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's cross country team both finished third at the Little East Conference Championships, hosted by Worcester State at Moore State Park Saturday. UMass Dartmouth's men were fourth and the women were fifth at the New England Alliance Championships.
UMD's women scored 80 points in the LEC meet, which was won by Keene State with 18 points. KSC also won the Alliance meet with 19 points, while UMD totaled 122. The men scored 85 points in the LEC meet and 123 in the Alliance, Keene State won both men's titles.
For the women, freshman Dekontee Chea (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) was fourth in 19:20.7, junior Meaghan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was 16th in 20:39, junior Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) finished 23rd in 20:53, junior Stacey Dybel (Littleton, MA/Notre Dame Academy) was 40th in 21:31, freshman Kelci Sullivan (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) finished 49th in 21:55, and freshman Brittany Lyons (South Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) finished 85th in 23:18.
For the men, senior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) of the Corsairs finished seventh in 26:54, senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was 11th in 26:15, junior Kevin Gilmore (Hanson, MA/ Whitman-Hanson HS) was 30th in 28:24, senior Derek Stevens (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) was 41st in 28:51, freshman Cody Gibney (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) was 51st in 29:07, junior Steve Burke (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) was 57th in 29:20, senior Wes Meserve (Merrimack, MA/Merrimack HS) finished 69th in 29:48, freshman Chris Jordan (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) was 78th in 30:24, junior Steve Dowsett (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield HS) finished 96th in 30:54, and junior Kevin Cordaro (Whitman, MA/ Whitman-Hanson HS) finished 114th in 31:31.
"Our men's team ran very well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "We had two runners in the top seven, which is the best we've had in some time. Nick Santoro ran well, Eric Nygaard may have run the best race he's ever run, Kevin Gilmore ran well, and Cody Gibney ran his best race of the season. We would have done even better had Derek Stevens not been just coming back off an injury."
"Our women's team ran better than they did last year, Dekontee Chea ran a fabulous race," said Hird. "She just got faster and faster and finished fourth overall. Meagan Bohigian and Courtney Testa ran well, Stacey Dybel ran her best race of the season, but we were missing junior Megan Oliveira (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) due to a work conflict. You can't find two more different areas of New England than our area and Moore State Park, we're pretty flat and the course we ran today is all uphill and downhill, so I thought overall, we did well."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to the Eastern College Athletic Conference next Saturday.
