BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team raced to a 37-12 halftime lead and went on to defeat host Simmons, 68-38, in a non-conference game at the Holmes Sports Center Wednesday evening.

The Corsairs scored 25 of the game's first 30 points.

Senior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Bridgewater State) and junior forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA/ Canton HS) sparked an early run that put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 9-4 early in the first half before the Corsairs scored 16 of the next 17 points to take a 25-5 lead with 6:30 remaining in the first half.

UMass Dartmouth held the Sharks to four of 24 shots from the field in the first half for 16.7 per cent.

Freshman guard Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) led the Corsairs with 17 points, while freshman guard Nicole Grassi (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North HS). Liz O'Connor led Simmons with 16 points. Garrity had nine rebounds as UMass Dartmouth outrebounded the Sharks, 39-24, and 12 Corsairs saw action, with none playing more than 25 minutes.

"We got off to a real good start, playing good defense and communicating with each other well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "Simmons runs a ton of screens and has a lot of different looks in their offense, and we prepared for them well and were able to defend them successfully. We got off to a big lead and never looked back, we had a chance to let some of our younger players play and we're happy with the results. In addition to bouncing back from our loss to Keene State, this also ends a very long road stretch, and we're happy to finish the semester at home against Plymouth State and Johnson & Wales."

The Corsairs improved to 5-3 with the victory, while the Sharks dropped to 1-6 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday
