Women's Basketball Tops Maine-Farmington, 71-50

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated visiting Maine-Farmington, 71-50, in the second round of the 2012 UMass Dartmouth Basketball Classic, presented by the Fairfield Inn & Suites, at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday.

Corsairs junior guard Erica Batchelder(Stoughton, MA/Soughton HS/Salem State) came off the bench and ignited a 17-4 run, in which you started and ended it with a three pointer and buried one more in the middle to turn a 14-10 deficit into a 27-18 lead with just under seven minutes to go in the first half.

The Corsairs also dominated the post play as junior forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA/Canton HS) and senior forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA/Canton HS) combined for 35 points on 14 of 27 shooting from the field and 21 rebounds.

"Batchelder was a nice spark off the bench and Collen and Erika were a force in the post" said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "We took good care of the ball and hit the boards well. Our defense needs to improve and we have to play smarter and look for good shots but for opening weekend, I am happy with the start."

The Corsairs only turned the ball over once in the first half en route to a 37-24 lead at intermission.

The Beavers opened the second half with a purpose, cutting the Corsairs lead to just 4 points at 41-37 with 15:25 left in the contest.  Maine-Farmington nailed three baskets from beyond the arc leading to a Corsairs timeout.  UMD answered right back with a jumper from Moriarty, a lay up from senior guard Shannon Singletary (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and a trifecta from Bornemann, swelling the lead back to double digits at 48-37.

Maine-Farmington would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way and the Corsiars locked in their second win of the young season when freshman guard Beth Castantini (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport HS) drained back to back three pointers to give the Corsairs an insurmontable lead at 63-47 with just over four minutes left.

The Corsairs were led  by Bornemann who had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.  Moriarty and Batchelder joined in her double digits in the scoring column with 17 and 16 respectively, while sophomore guard Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) joined her in the rebounding department with 10 boards.

Junior forward Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, ME/Messalonskee) led the Beavers with 14 points and senior forward Kenni Norton (Stong, ME/St.Abram) chipped in with 10 points.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-0 with the victory, while UMF fell to 0-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State Tuesday evening.
