How it Happened
Examond shot an efficient 11-of-13 from the field, in addition to grabbing nine offensive boards and blocking two shots on the afternoon. Fellow frontcourt forward Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) also recorded a double-double, dropping 12 points and corralling 11 missed shots. Junior Kailyn Milligan (Lakeville, Mass.) chipped in 11 on offense, tying her career-best.
Each squad struggled to find its groove on the offensive end, as it was not until the 6:04 mark of the first quarter when Southern Maine's Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, QC) opened the scoring with a layup. Visiting senior guard Emily Nicholson (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) drained a pair of back-to-back three pointers to put the finishing touches on an 8-0 visitor run. The Huskies, who shot 55% from long range in the first half, carried a 33-17 lead into the break.
The hosts would go on a run of their own, outscoring Southern Maine 11-3 to begin the third quarter. With just under two minutes remaining in the penultimate stanza, Corsair junior Danyel Gonzalez (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished the layup through contact to bring the contest within single-digits, 42-33.
At the beginning of the fourth, UMass Dartmouth scored six straight to knot the affair up at 46 after Milligan knocked down a baseline jumper off the feed from teammate Kutil. Following a series of made baskets by both sides, the Corsairs took its first lead of the afternoon with just over three and a half minutes to go on a mid-range shot by sophomore Ashley Brown (Fairhaven, Mass.), 52-51. The Corsair frontcourt drained their free throws over the final minutes of the contest, sealing the comeback win.
