PAWTUCKET, RI. - University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) sealed the third consecutive Little East Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the Corsairs, posting back-to-back double-doubles in a 2-1 week for the team. It was the third time in 2017-18 that Examond earned the recognition.
Over the three games, Examond averaged 21 points, 11.3 rebounds, a 52% shooting percentage, and came away with five blocks. On Monday against #8 Tufts University, the junior posted her most-impressive performance, pouring in 32 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a losing effort to the Jumbos. She also set a new-career high for free throws made in a single game, knocking down 14-of-18 from the stripe. On Wednesday, Examond collected her second double-double in the span, and eighth of the season, leading the Corsairs over UMass Boston with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds to secure the top-spot in the LEC.
Examond has strung together an impressive campaign for UMD, as she leads the LEC in rebounds per game and field goal percentage at 10.3 and 60.6% respectively. She also currently sits second in the conference in points per game with 19.9 - four points better than her previous career-high of 15.8 which was set last season.
The Corsairs continue the stretch of LEC matchups with two in the coming week. On January 17th, Rhode Island College comes to the Tripp for a 5:30 PM tipoff, before the team hits the road to square off with Western Connecticut University on January 27th at 1:00 PM.
