UMass Dartmouth senior All-America Nakira Examond has been selected to play in the inaugural Beyond Sports Women’s Collegiate All-Star Game presented by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) on Saturday, March 16th as part of the NCAA Division III national championship weekend. Tip-off for the event at the Cregger Center in Salem, Va. is set for 5:00 pm EDT.
A native of New Bedford, Mass. and a graduate of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, Examond was one of eight players selected for a special fan vote that would determine the final five student-athletes invited to the game, which will take place prior to the 2019 NCAA Division III national championship contest hosted on the campus of Roanoke College.
The two-time Little East Conference Player of the Year, Examond averaged 17.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per game while shooting a league best 59 percent from the floor on the season, as she graduated as the program’s all-time leading scorer (1,675 points) and rebounder (1,035 boards). Nakira, who earned honorable mention All-America accolades from d3hoops.com a year ago, helped lead the Corsairs to their second straight Little East regular season title this winter with an overall mark of 22-5, including a 14-2 slate in conference play.
“I couldn’t be more pleased for Nakira on her selection to this prestigious event,” UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Matt Ducharme said of Examond’s honor. “She has not only established herself as one of the best players in the region—she is certainly one of the best in the country, and I know she will be an outstanding representative of our program and our school throughout the weekend.”
In addition to Saturday’s All-Star Game, Examond will participate in a community service activity at Hope Tree Academy in Salem, a pair of youth clinics and a Women’s Leaders Seminar panel presentation. She will also be recognized with her fellow all-stars in a halftime presentation during Saturday’s national championship game.
