| Position: | Head Coach |
Amanda Van Voorhis enters her fifth season as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at UMass Dartmouth and looks to continue guiding the program into uncharted territory. Last year, the Corsairs were 15-11, which was their first winning season in 19 years.
Van Voorhis added to her duties in March 2012 when she was named the Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Women's Administrator.. A former Brown University Assistant Coach and the former Head Coach at Salve Regina University, Van Voorhis took over the Corsairs prior to the 2008-09 season.
In each of the last four seasons, UMass Dartmouth has moved up in the Little East Conference standings. The Corsairs have finished eighth, sixth and fifth, respectively, since Van Voorhis became head coach. Freshman forward Erika Bornemann was named Rookie of the Year two years ago. With a solid nucleus of returning players and her fourth recruiting class in place, Van Voorhis feels that her team is in position to contend for a Little East Conference championship.
Van Voorhis, who succeeded Mick Klitzner, was hired after a
national search that was conducted when the position was made
full-time. She is the first full-time Head Women's Basketball Coach
at UMass Dartmouth since Judy Sullivan completed a 16-year stint at
the end of the 1992-93 season. Van Voorhis also oversees
scheduling, transportation, and the assignment of officials for the
Corsair athletic department.
Van Voorhis joined the Corsairs after a year as an Assistant Coach
at Brown. Previously, she compiled a record of 143-51 in seven
seasons as the Head Coach at Salve Regina University. Her teams at
SRU won four Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships, advancing
to the NCAA Division III Tournament on each occasion. Following the
2001-2002 season, Van Voorhis was named CCC Women's Basketball
Coach of the Year and was a New England Women's Basketball
Association Coach of the Year nominee. She was named Cox Media
Rhode Island Women's Basketball Coach of the Year following the
2006-2007 season. While at Salve, she led her teams to four 20+ win
seasons, six winning campaigns, and improved from a 12-13 record
during her first year to a 24-5 mark in her second season. Van
Voorhis holds an overall 179-119 coaching record in her 11 seasons
as a Head Coach.
A native of Burlington, MA, Van Voorhis graduated from Millis High
School and played basketball for two seasons at Springfield
College. Following her graduation, she began her career at Western
New England College, serving as an Assistant Coach for two seasons
before moving on to Ithaca as an Assistant Coach for the 1999-2000
season. While she was at Ithaca, the Bombers went 21-7, were
co-champions of the Empire Eight Conference, and also won the New
York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association and the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Upstate New York championships.
"We are thrilled to have Amanda Van Voorhis at UMass Dartmouth as
the Head Women's Basketball Coach," said UMass Dartmouth Director
of Athletics Ian Day. "She's exactly the type of coach we were
searching for. Amanda brings with her not only a proven track
record as a successful head coach, but also a commitment to
providing a positive collegiate experience for the
student-athletes."
