NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Freshman forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA/Canton HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team has been honored by the Little East Conference.
Bornemann has been named LEC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week. It's the fourth time this season that Bornemann was earned the award, and the third time in the last four weeks.
Bornemann was honored for her play in the Corsairs' two games last week. She averaged a double double, 19 points and 11.5 rebounds, as the Corsairs split their games last week She made 43.8 per cent (14-for-32) of her attempts from the field in the two games, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes in a victory at UMass Boston. Against Eastern Connecticut, she just missed a double double, scoring 16 points and adding nine rebounds.
"Erika continues to be the driving force behind the success of our team, and has stepped up her game to put us in a position to make the playoffs," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "She is becoming more comfortable with her defensive assignments and taking better shots. Erika is better prepared physically and mentally at this point in the season for the challenges that each game presents. She is a tremendous asset for our squad and has the necessary tools that would categorize her as a top player in the LEC".
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday.
