Women's Basketball Opens LEC Playoffs at Western Connecticut
Feb. 20, 2012
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team will make their second and final trip of the season to Western Connecticut State when they visit the Colonials in their Little East Conference playoff opener Tuesday evening. Game time at Feldman Arena is 7:00 p.m.
The Corsairs and WCSU split their league games this year, with the Colonials winning, 61-54, in Danbury January 7th, and UMD returning the favor, 60-57, at the Tripp Athletic Center February 4th.
UMass Dartmouth is the fifth-seeded team in the tournament, and comes in with a 15-10 overall record and a 6-8 LEC mark. WCSU, the fourth seed, is 16-9 and was 8-6 in LEC play.
"We're happy with our draw," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "We've had some success against Western Connecticut, notable when they came here and we beat them on February 4th. We played well the past week, beating UMass Boston and playing well against Southern Maine."
The Corsairs have been improving, and posted strong efforts the second time they played each of the top two teams in the league, Rhode Island College and Southern Maine. "With some teams, it takes a little longer to get it together, and we are playing well right now," said Van Voorhis. "We feel we can compete with anyone."
In order to be successful against the Colonials, UMD will have to put forth a strong effort. "Western Connecticut is a good team with good big people, and they have several players who are good three-point shooters," said Van Voorhis. "They are perimeter-oriented, and we'll have to do a good job defensively against them."
The winner of Tuesday night's game will advance to play top-seeded and host Rhode Island College at the LEC Final Four Friday evening.
