PLYMOUTH, NH-Jackie Morin scored twice in the second half and host Plymouth State held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team, 4-3, in the final Little East Conference match of the year for both teams at Arold Field Saturday.
Morin scored two goals less than four minutes apart in the second half, at 62:31 and 66:29, to give PSU a 4-2 lead. Junior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) scored with 1:15 remaining, but the Corsairs could come no closer.
Sophomore forward Kayla Ribsam (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon Regional HS) gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead when she scored at 4:18 of the first half, but Nikki Garvey tied the score when she scored 36 seconds later. Junior forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven. MA/Bishop Stang HS) gave the Corsairs a 2-0 advantage with a goal at 40:08, but Garvey scored again a minute and 21 seconds later to tie the score for the final time.
"We knew it would be a fight for the home field advantage, and Plymouth had a real strong, aggressive, physical team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We just couldn't come out ahead at the finish. I'm not going to be satisfied until we put all of the pieces together. We will continue to put the pieces together throughout the tournament."
The Panthers outshot the Corsairs, 13-7. UMD sophomore goalkeepers Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made four saves, while PSU's Hilary Lemelin had three saves.
The Corsairs dropped to 9-9 and 8-3 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Panthers improved to 15-2 and 10-1 in LEC play with the victory, which allowed them to clinch second place and the second seed in next week's Little East Conference playoffs. Both teams will return to action when the LEC playoffs begin Tuesday.
