CAMBRIDGE, MA-Kimberly Barker scored twice to lead the 20th ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team, 3-1, in the Corsairs' 2012 season opener at Jack Barry Field Saturday.
Freshman midfielder Emily Anderson (Medway, MA/Medway HS) scored the Corsairs' only goal off a penalty corner at 26:37 to cut the Engineers' margin in half at the intermission.
Barker scored her second goal of the game at 50:04 to account for the final margin
Elizabeth Dathy put MIT ahead, 1-0, with a goal on a penalty stroke eight minutes and 52 seconds into the first half. Barker made it 2-0 when she scored a minute and 50 seconds later.
"Today's game was a good test for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Both teams came out with determination and played some good field hockey. We have a better outlook on all areas of improvement, and will work on those set pieces going into our next match against Clark."
MIT out shot UMass Dartmouth, 21-7. Sophomore goalkeepers Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made 13 saves for UMD, while Jenna Kline stopped two shots for MIT.
The Engineers improved to 2-0 with the victory, while the Corsairs fell to 0-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Clark Thursday evening. MIT will visit Lasell Tuesday.
