NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team defeated visiting Nichols 2-1 in overtime, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Thursday evening.
Nichols came out of the gates quickly taking an early 1-0 lead when senior forward Emily Widdison (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield HS) scored her team leading 16th goal of the season. The Corsairs would answer back less than four minutes later when as senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) found the back of the net off a pass from freshman forward Cory Connolly (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS). With the goal Allan has now scored in four consecutive contests.
After the early scoring both team traded blows, but neither was able to capitalize, taking the 1-1 tie into halftime and into overtime.
The Corsairs came marching down the field in overtime as junior midfielder Devon Herlihy (Stratham, NH/Exeter HS) scored the game-winner just 35 seconds into extra time.
The win was UMD's fifth in a row.
"We had a lot of missed opportunities today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Overall I'm happy with the result and we'll go back over the game and build off it to prepare to move forward in Little East Conference play. Lauren (O'Brien) made a presence for herself making key saves and motivating and firing up our defensive back line."
The Corsairs outshot the Bison, 16-9. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made three saves for UMD, while sophomore Molly Melanson (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) stopped six shots for Nichols.
UMD improved to 8-3 with the victory, while Nichols fell to 7-4 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Southern Maine Saturday. The Bison will visit Endicott Saturday.
