MIDDLETOWN, CT-Host Wesleyan scored three time in the first half and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Smith Field Thursday evening.
Ashley McLaren put the Cardinals on top 3:46 into the match when she converted a pass from Vanessa Block off a penalty corner. Taryn Murray scored the first of her three goals nine minutes later. She scored the third and final goal 14 seconds before time expired in the first half, converting a pass from Amber Bruckner.
"We were simply not on our game tonight," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We came out flat and let the first half get away from us. Our defense stepped up bigger in the second half, but we weren't able to put things together offensively. This will be a good chance for us to toughen up and tighten up our game before we play Bridgewater State on Saturday
The Cardinals outshot the Corsairs, 18-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made 11 saves for UMD, while Tori Redding made two for Wesleyan.
The Cardinals improved to 6-4 with the victory, while the Corsairs fell to 9-5 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Saturday.
