NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team broke open a close game with three goals in the second half and went on to defeat host Wellesley, 4-0, in a non-conference match at the Wellesley Outdoor Fields Complex Wednesday.
Senior midfielder Jenna Miedzionowski (Beverly, MA/Hamilton-Wenham HS) broke a scoreless tie, scoring off a penalty corner with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.
Freshman forward Cory Connolly (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) made it 2-0 with a goal less than four minutes into the second half. Miedzionowski converted a pass from junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS) kin the 58th minute to make it 3-0, then set up the final goal by senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) with just 70 seconds remaining.
"We executed on our attacking end and we were able to truly play much better overall team defense in the second half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Jenna played a great game in the midfield and (senior defender) Taryn (Cardiel, Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) was especially strong in controlling the defensive zone. Erica Allan caused several corners for us and we were able to deliver. It's a positive note for us to go into Saturday's conference play."
Each team had 10 shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made four saves for UMass Dartmouth to earn the shutout, while Brit Mscisz and Becky Hamilton combined to make three saves for the Blue.
UMD improved to 13-5 with the victory, while Wellesley dropped to 11-7 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday on Senior Day.
