NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team will try to earn their third Little East Conference championship in the last four years when they host Western Connecticut State in the first round of the LEC Tournament Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs are top-seeded, and are 14-5 and 11-0 in LEC play. The Colonials are 5-12 and 3-8 in LEC action.
This is UMass Dartmouth's 10th appearance since the LEC Tournament began in 1998. They won the championship in 2009 at Keene State, repeated the next season with a win at home against Bridgewater State, and, since Nicole Castonguay became head coach prior to the 2006 season, have advanced to the tournament every season and made it at least as far as the semi-finals.
In 19 games, the Corsairs have outscored their opponents, 40-23. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS), who has seen all of the action in goal, has eight shutouts and a goals against average of 1.54.
"I am proud of how we approached the regular season with a game by game mentality and now, we must take lessons learned and bring them with us into the playoffs," said Castonguay. "We ended our LEC season with a few close games, so we are aware and mentally prepared for what's ahead this week."
The winner of Thursday's match advances to a semi-final match Saturday, with the final scheduled for Sunday. The Corsairs will host all of their matches as long as they continue in the tournament.
