NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team defeated Clark University in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday evening, 1-0.
The Corsairs recorded the only goal of the game 29:54 into the first half. Sophomore forward Jill Levrault (Somerset, MA / Somerset) scored an unassisted goal off a defensive deflection. UMass Dartmouth had two penalty stroke opportunities, one in the first half and one in the second, but failed to capitalize on either attempt.
The Corsairs' goalkeeper, Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA / Old Rochester Regional), had one save as she recorded her second straight shut out. Cougars' goalkeeper Christine Tinsman (Prairie Village, Kan. / Pembroke Hill School) recorded nine saves, making one of the nine on a penalty stroke.
UMass Dartmouth's defense has been very strong thus far in league play. In two LEC contests, the Corsairs have held their opponents to only five shots on goal and have yet to surrender a goal.
"I build my teams on strength and defense," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Maher. "I told the girls we need to take this game and learn from it. We have some film to watch and things to learn. It's a matter of getting everyone to click."
The Corsairs improved to 3-2 with the victory, while the Cougars dropped to 2-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Westfield State on Saturday. Clark will host Elms on Thursday.
