Late Penalty Corner Lifts Field Hockey Over Westfield State, 2-1

WESTFIELD, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Ciara Anderson (Medway, Mass.) broke the one-all score in the waning minutes on a corner opportunity, lifting the Corsairs to a 2-1 final in Little East Conference competition at Westfield State on Saturday.

The Basics
Score: UMass Dartmouth 2, Westfield State 1
Records: UMass Dartmouth (5-6, 3-4 LEC) | Westfield State (5-6, 4-3 LEC)

How it Happened
A scoreless first half gave way to both teams intensifying the offensive output in the second stanza. Just two minutes out of the halftime intermission, sophomore Katrina Perry (Raynham, Mass.) delivered a back-door pass to junior Mary Brown (Leicester, Mass.) who converted on a diving shot into the back right corner of the cage.

Westfield State answered almost immediately to knot the score at one, when Cora Rodgers (Milford, N.H.) collected the rebound off the initial shot by Carly Zona (Auburn, Mass.) to beat Corsair goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) in the 39th minute.

The Owls unleashed a barrage of shots in the following 25 minutes, seeing seven penalty corner opportunities, but Burke held in strong for five of her eight saves during the span. UMass Dartmouth seized control in the 60th minute, beginning with a Delaney Burns (Wayne, N.J.) shot, and less than four minutes later senior Haley Donahay (Cranston, R.I.) lined up for a corner. She found Anderson, who unleashed to bump the Corsairs back ahead 2-1.

The remaining five minutes saw the ball stay on the Corsair end, with two more penalty corners allowing time to expire on any further Owl looks.
