MEDFORD, MA-Third-ranked Tufts scored three goals in the first 34 minutes and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team, 4-0, in a non-conference match at Bello Field Wednesday afternoon.
Tamara Brown opened the scoring, connecting on the first shot of the game for the Jumbos to make it 1-0 at the 1:17 mark. Brown scored again to make it 2-0 at 25:19, and Melissa Brown gave Tufts a 3-0 lead when she scored 1:16 before the end of the first half. Kerry Eaton scored the final goal of the game at the 67:50 mark.
"We put Tufts on the schedule because they are a very tough team, and they can show us where we want our program to be," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We need to take what we can from a game like this and step it up when we play our conference games."
The Jumbos out shot the Corsairs, 42-6. The Corsairs' senior goalkeeper, Seana Golden (Somerset, MA/Bishop Stang HS), made 17 saves, while Marianna Zak and Katie Hyder each made one.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 3-4 with the defeat, while Tufts improved to 4-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Westfield State Saturday.
