DANBURY, CT-DeAnne Mastrocola scored off a penalty corner with 10:10 remaining to lift host Western Connecticut State to a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team, 3-2, in a Little East Conference match at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday evening.
Mastrocola converted passes from Nicole Andreasen and Lauren Atkinson to break a 2-2 tie at the 59:50 mark.
The Corsairs had come from behind twice to tie the score.
Junior forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Bishop Stang HS) scored both goals for UMass Dartmouth. She converted a penalty stroke opportunity at 13:43 to tie the game at 1-1, and then scored from a pile-up in the goalmouth at 47:02 to even the score at 2-2. Junior forward Erica Allan(Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) assisted on Taylor's second goal.
Atkinson scored twice for the Colonials. She put WCSU ahead, 1-0 with a goal off a penalty corner at 7:13, and then made it 2-1 when she scored on a breakaway at 32:20.
"A loss early on can be a gift, we will continue to work harder and our game will continue to improve," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We have a lot of individual talent, and once the chemistry comes, I'll feel a lot better. This is a good test for us. We have a lot of conference matches ahead, and we have to just take them one at a time."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Western Connecticut, 13-11. Sophomore goalkeepers Kelsey Gallo (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich HS) and Lauren O'Brien(Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) combined to make four saves for UMD, while Alyssa Picariello made six for WCSU.
The Corsairs dropped to 3-4 and 2-1 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Colonials improved to 7-2 and 3-1 in LEC action with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Worcester State Wednesday evening
