NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team scored twice in the final 14 minutes and blanked visiting Westfield State, 3-0, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday.
Junior forward Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/Quinnipiac) scored the first two goals for the Corsairs. She took a pass from junior defender Kate Dorrance (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) off a penalty corner and tapped it past WSC sophomore goalkeeper Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA) at 19:20 for the only score of the first half. She took a pass from sophomore defender Maille Lynch-Gilbert (Petersham, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) after a penalty corner to make it 2-0 with 13:44 remaining. Freshman defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) scored her first goal after taking a pass from junior midfielder Kellie Finn (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/St. Michael's) with 29 seconds remaining.
"After five games in a row on the road, today we had everything in place," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We worked a ton on attack corners and we had a ton of those today. We worked a ton on backfield defense, we were super-organized, we played as a team, and that's why we won."
The Corsairs out shot the Owls, 20-4. UMD senior goalkeeper, Seana Golden (Somerset, MA/Bishop Stang HS), made two saves to earn the shutout, while McCarthy made 12.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 4-4 and 2-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Westfield State dropped to 4-4 and 1-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Fitchburg State Wednesday evening. Westfield State will host Keene State Wednesday.
