Field Hockey Looks to Defend LEC Title
Nov. 1, 2010
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team will begin their journey towards a second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth when they host Salem State in a Little East Conference first round playoff match Tuesday evening. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs come into the match as the top seed in the LEC with a 12-7 overall record and a 10-1 conference mark. Salem State is 8-8 and 5-6 and is the eighth seed. The Corsairs won, 5-2, at Salem State on October 2nd.
"In the past, we've always been fighting to the end to set ourselves up for a good spot in the playoffs, but, this year, we wanted to fight for every game, and I'm proud of our team for doing that," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Although we wanted to go 11-0 in the conference, we had two tough losses last week, and that was a great way to set things up for practice this week. We've already gone through the toughest part of our season, and our team is willing to do whatever it takes. Our senior class has fought hard, and they're mentally prepared to do whatever it takes."
The Corsairs realize that everyone is starting over at this point. "It is still one game at a time," said Castonguay. "Now, it's all about preparing for Salem State, and it is a fresh start for both teams as far as I'm concerned. We see the game Tuesday as a really tough game. I'm excited to see how the tournament turns out; there are a lot of strong teams in the conference this year."
The playoffs continue with the semi=finals Thursday and the final Saturday. The Corsairs will continue to host as long as they continue to win.
