Jerry Jennings has been associated with UMD athletics
since 1987. His assignments have included roles as Head Diving
Coach, Head Coach of Swimming and Diving, Head Coach of Women's
Lacrosse, and Director of Intramurals and Recreational sports.
The bulk of Jennings' experience is in the field of Swimming and Diving. At UMass Dartmouth, Coach Jennings produced eight All-America athletes, and fifteen NCAA Championships qualifiers. Of that group, his athletes in Diving won eight Little East Diving Championships, seven New England Diving Championships, and two record setting NCAA Championships. Between 1989 and 2006, he was a six-time winner of the Charles Batterman award as New England Intercollegiate Diving Coach of the year. In 1992, Jennings was selected as the NCAA Diving Coach of the year. In swimming he produced three New England Champions, and two NCAA All America Awards. In 2004, he was the recipient of The South Coast Aquatics " Coaching Legend Award", for his contributions to Swimming and Diving.
After relinquishing Head coaching duties in Swimming, Coach Jennings began a new program in Women's Lacrosse at UMD. Since it's inception, the Corsairs have been annual qualifiers in LEC Championship tourneys, ECAC post season play, and boast two conference Rookies of the year, plus over 10 All Conference selections. Jennings is the current Little East Coaches Representative, and is also a member of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse New England Regional Selection Committee.
Taking the helm of Women's Lacrosse is the latest coaching assignment for Coach Jennings, who had served as Head Diving coach at the University of Maryland, and West Virginia University. Following these successful experiences, he accepted a posting at Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, where he became a tenured faculty member, and Head Coach of Swimming and Diving. He produced nearly twenty All- America athletes at W&J, including the first ever NCAA Champion.
In 1976, and again in 1980, Jennings was chosen as Director of the Division Three NCAA Championships. Coach Jennings holds the rare distinction of developing All America Athletes in men's and women's Swimming, Diving, and Lacrosse, as well as NCAA Champions at two institutions.
A native of Rhode Island, Jennings was inducted into that states' Aquatic Hall of Fame in 1989 for honors received as an All America athlete, Coach, and NCAA Championships administrator. In 2004, he was inducted into the Cranston (RI) Hall of Fame as a member of the undefeated and New England Championship Team.
