WEST PALM BEACH, FL-Springfield took an 11-0 halftime lead and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 12-3, in the first game of the Corsairs' 2009 spring trip at Lake Lytal Field Tuesday evening.
The Corsairs outscored the Pride in the second half, 3-1, and had a statistical edge after halftime as well. Junior midfielder Kara Basque (Plainville, MA/King Phillip HS/Sacred Heart) put UMass Dartmouth on the scoreboard with 28:28 remaining in the second half, freshman midfielder Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored at 19:18, and sophomore attacker Samantha Wonson (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) made it 11-3 at 16:00. The Pride scored their final goal of the game with 39 seconds remaining.
UMass Dartmouth, which was out shot in the first half, 17-2, held a 13-2 advantage in shots after halftime.
"Springfield is a NEWMAC (New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference) power and a very good team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "In the second half, we played the way we are capable of playing, and we womn the second half. I was very pleased with the way we played in the second half."
Overall, the Pride out shot the Corsairs, 19-15. UMass Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Lauren Barber (Andover, MA/Andover HS) was credited with two saves.
The Corsairs dropped to 0-2 with the defeat, while the Pride improved to 2-2 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they play Clarkson Thursday in West Palm Beach.
