FITCHBURG, MA-Host Fitchburg State took a 5-2 halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 9-5, in a non-conference game at Michael P. Riccards Field at the Elliott Athletic Complex Saturday.
Senior midfielder Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/Quinnipiac) scored with 22:44 left in the first half to tie the score, but the Falcons got two goals from Amanda Burns and scores from Kelly Finamore and Tessa Leahy to take a 5-1 lead before senior midfielder Larissa Basque, Plainville, MA/King Phillip HS) scored on a free position shot with 9:04 left in the first half.
The Falcons scored the first four goals of the second half before senior defender Kaitlyn Cleverdon (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional HS); junior midfielder Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) and Kinchla scored the final three goals of the game.
"Our defense played great, but our offense wasn't there today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "In order to win, we have to have a balanced effort. We put too much pressure on our defense."
The Falcons outshot the Corsairs, 23-17. Sophomore goalkeeper Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made nine saves for UMD, while Dylana Drolette made 10 stops for Fitchburg State.
The Corsairs dropped to 1-3 with the defeat, while the Falcons improved to 2-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Worcester State next Wednesday. Fitchburg State will host Plymouth State Tuesday.
