March 30, 2011

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team exploded for 10 goals in the second half and defeated visiting Worcester State, 16-8, in a non-conference game at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing at halftime, 7-6, the Corsairs scored the first five goals of the second half to take the lead for good.

Senior midfielder Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/Quinnipiac) scored the first four goals, and with freshman midfielder Katie Brecken (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS) adding the other. After freshman attacker Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) broke the streak with a goal for the Lancers, UMD scored five more goals to win going away.

Kinchla led UMass Dartmouth with six goals, freshman attacker Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) added three goals and three assists, and junior midfielder Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) had two goals and four assists. Strazzere led WSU with four goals, while senior midfielder Carley MacIntyre (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) added a pair.

"We turned it around in the second half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "Our goalie, (sophomore) Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford HS), stopped at least seven point blank shots, and the team gave her the game ball for her effort. We were stale on offense, and once our team saw Angelina step up, we started to play our game and not theirs. We were balanced on offense and on defense, and I knew that once we caught fire and got a chance to run our plays, we would do well. We were very effective at the end, and I believe that our conditioning was also a factor."

The Lancers outshot the Corsairs, 30-29. Donovan made 14 saves for UMD, while junior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA/Saugus HS) made nine stops for Worcester State.

The Corsairs improved to 2-3 with the victory, while the Lancers dropped to 0-4 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Southern Maine Saturday. WSU will host Westfield State Saturday.
