DANBURY, CT-Host Western Connecticut State scored the final six goals of the first half, took an 8-1 halftime lead, and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 13-2, in a non-conference match at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday.
After the Colonials took a 2-0 lead, senior midfielder Samantha Wonson (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) scored UMass Dartmouth's first goal of the game with 19:48 remaining in the first half. WCSU scored six times during the next eight and a half minutes to take a seven-goal lead into the halftime intermission.
Lindsay Gorman scored early in the second half to make it 9-1, but senior midfielder Larissa Basque (Plainville, MA/King Phillip HS) countered for UMD with 18:19 remaining. WCSU blanked the Corsairs for the remainder of the game.
Kaitlyn Arconti and Devon Edwards each scored three goals for Western Connecticut, while Lauren Poppe and Lindsay Gorman each scored twice. Sophomore midfielder Denise Gates (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam HS) and junior midfielder Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) each had an assist for UMass Dartmouth.
"Our offense was very ineffective today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "Our defense played a very good game, but we have to play well both offensively and defensively to be successful, and we didn't do that today."
The Colonials outshot the Corsairs, 30-18. Sophomore goalkeeper Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made eight saves for UMD, while Karli Portnoy stopped 11 shots for ECSU.
The Corsairs dropped to 4-9 and 0-4 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Colonials improved to 7-7 and 2-2 in LEC play with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Wednesday. WCSU will visit Eastern Connecticut State Wednesday.
