NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Eastern Connecticut State set the tone early and cruised to a 17-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.
A rain shower which began in the game's closing minutes served as a metaphor for the day, which saw a storm of Warrior goals from start to finish. Nine different players found the back of the net for Eastern Connecticut, led by a game-high four goals by freshman midfielder Daniella Marchitto (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS). Senior attacker Brooke Wayte (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport HS) was also a key contributor, scoring three goals and notching a pair of assists. .
The Warriors scored the game's first eight goals before junior attacker Gillian Carey (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS/UMass Amherst) got the Corsairs on the board on a free position shot with 13:12 remaining in the first half. Three minutes later, junior attacker Samantha Wonson (Lowell, Mass./Lowell HS) took a feed from freshman midfielder Heather Masse (Billerica, Mass./Shawsheen HS) and scored to draw the Corsairs to within 8-2 and round out UMass Dartmouth's scoring for the day. The Warriors recovered and scored the game's final nine markers. The Corsairs trailed 12-2 at halftime. "Eastern is a very good team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings.
In a second half bright spot, freshman goalie Angelina Donovan (Medford, Mass./Medford HS) turned away eight Eastern Connecticut shots in a busy second half. Donovan relieved senior Liz Miller (Littleton, Mass./Westford Academy) between the pipes after the half. The tandem combined for a total of 11 saves.
The Corsairs dropped to 4-7 and 1-4 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Warriors improved to 6-8 and 4-1 in the LEC with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Smith Thursday evening. Eastern Connecticut will visit Bridgewater State Thursday.
