April 30, 2009
MANSFIELD, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State scored seven goals in the first 10 and a half minutes, raced to a 12-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 16-0, in a Little East Conference semi-final playoff match at the ECSU Outdoor Sports Center Thursday.
Brooke Wayte scored five goals and added two assists for the Warriors, while Jessica Richards had three assists.
"We just couldn't get anything going, and we couldn't match Eastern's intensity from the start," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "They were definitely the better team today. They came out and played very well right from the start of the game, and we were not able to respond."
ECSU out shot UMass Dartmouth, 31-7. Junior goalkeeper Liz Miller (Littleton, MA/Westford Academy/New Hampshire) of the Corsairs made eight saves, while the Warriors' Kristianna Ibsen made two.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 6-11 with the defeat, while Eastern Connecticut improved to 9-8 with the victory. The Warriors will host the conference championship game against Keene State Saturday. The competition was the final match of the season for the Corsairs.
