MANSFIELD, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State scored the first 11 goals of the game and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 20-5, in their Little East Conference quarter-final playoff match at the ECSU Outdoor Sports Complex Tuesday.
Ashley Del Vecchio, Daniela Marchitto and Katie Beers each scored twice and Brooke Wayte scored three times for the Warriors in the first 16:48 before sophomore midfielder Larissa Basque (Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS) put UMass Dartmouth on the board when she scored with 9:45 remaining in the first half. Sophomore defender Brittany Partridge (Littleton, MA/Littleton HS) and senior midfielder Liz Stapleton (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) scored to cut the lead to 13-3 with 3:48 left in the first half. Basque and senior defender Andrea Russo (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) scored for the Corsairs in the second half.
Basque led UMD with two goals. Marchitta and Del Vecchio each scored four for ECSU, while Wayte had three.
"I was not pleased with the outcome, but I was pleased with our effort, especially in the second half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "Eastern is a talented team, and we held them pretty well in the second half. It will give us something to build on for next year."
The Warriors out shot the Corsairs, 36-8. Nancy Ibrahim and Taylor Bidmead combined to make one save for the Warriors, while freshman Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 11 saves for UMD.
The Corsairs dropped to 4-10 with the defeat, while the Warriors improved to 8-9 with the victory. Eastern Connecticut will return to action when they visit second seed Plymouth State Thursday. The match was the final competition of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
