NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team will open the 2008 Little East Conference playoffs when they host Western Connecticut State Tuesday, April 29th. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Cressy Field, following the men's lacrosse playoff game against Plymouth State.
The Corsairs come into the game as the fourth-seeded team in the playoffs with an overall record of 8-5 and an LEC mark of 3-3. The Colonials are 4-13 and 1-5 and are the tournament's fifth seed. The home night game is the first for the Corsairs.
"We're looking forward to our first-ever night game at Cressy Field," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "Hopefully, we can bounce back from our loss Sunday."
Jennings' team will face a team coached by his former assistant coach, Jen Burrows, who is in her second season at Western Connecticut. The Corsairs and Colonials will be playing for the second time in four days, as UMass Dartmouth defeated WCSU at Cressy Field Saturday, 15-11.
"It is strange to be playing a team twice in such a short span of time, but it is strange for them, too," said Jennings. "It will be a unique setting, since we're at home for both games, and their coach is a former player of ours who we have great respect for."
The Corsairs led 7-3 at halftime Saturday, and held a commanding 15-6 lead with 12 minutes remaining before Western Connecticut rallied and scored the final five goals of the game.
"The key to winning is to be certain that we play well defensively against their big scorers," said Jennings. "We'll rely on our seniors to show the way in their fourth and final series of Little East Conference playoff games. We'd like to be successful and move on."
The winner of Tuesday night's game will play at Eastern Connecticut State Thursday afternoon in a semi-final game.
