May 7, 2008
PROVIDENCE, RI-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Senior midfielder Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and freshman defender Larissa Basque (Plainville, MA/King Phillip Regional HS) have been named first team All-Little East Conference, while senior goalkeeper Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS) was named second team All-Conference.
Spang led the team with 42 goals and was second with 59 points. She was fourth in the Little East Conference in points per game, sixth in assists per game and tied for second in points per game. Basque scored 20 goals and added two assists for 22 points. Doherty was fourth in the conference with a 10.51 goals-against average, played every minute of every game in goal for the Corsairs, and tied for second in the LEC with a save percentage of .500.
"I was very happy to see our players honored," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "Marie3 is our second two-time first team All-Conference player. Erin made All-Conference as a result of her hard work over the course of her career. Her one goal was to help the team, and, in doing so, she was rewarded. Larissa was terrific, notably on defense. She has a bright future. Our conference has improved, and it is a testament to the strength of our conference that we have freshmen coming in and earning All-Conference honors."
The Corsairs finished 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the Little East Conference. They hosted a first round conference playoff game and advanced to the semi-finals.
