Women's Lacrosse Set for Season Opener Next Monday

March 5, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-After advancing to the semi-finals of the Little East Conference Tournament last season, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team hopes to continue their improvement this season. The Corsairs will open their 2009 season when they host Roger Williams Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Cressy Field.

UMass Dartmouth was 9-6 overall last season, went 3-3 in the LEC, and hosted and won a first round playoff game before seeing their season end in the semi-finals. "I think our team will be improved this year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "We had a great recruiting class, we're playing stronger teams outside of the league, and we return three outstanding captains in (junior) Andrea Russo (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS), Allison Trearchis (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) and Colleen Allen (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester HS). We expect to get great leadership from our trio of captains."

With their third through eighth highest scorers returning, the Corsairs have a good base to build on. "We return some outstanding players from Massachusetts powerhouse King Phillip High School in (sophomore) Larissa Basque and (junior) Kara Basque (both from Plainville, MA)," said Jennings. "Larissa was first team All-Conference last year as a freshman. Our leading scorer from the first part of the season, (junior) Gillian Carey (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS), who averaged five goals a game before she became ill, returns healthy and ready to go."

UMass Dartmouth's three captains will all play prominent roles. "Colleen Allen will anchor the defense, with Allison Trearchis and Andrea Russo in midfield," said Jennings. "Another of our All-Conference players, (junior) Liz Stapleton (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS), will be a mainstay as well. We have an excellent recruiting class in (freshmen) Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) and Casey Otovic (Wilmington, MA/Bishop Fenwick HS), and we expect big things from (junior) Alex Wade, who transferred here from Assumption last year, as well as (sophomore) Rachel Carlucci (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS), who transferred from Southern Connecticut State, and (freshman) Kaitlyn Cleverdon (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional HS), who transferred here from Vermont.

Goalkeeper Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS) was the Corsairs' third All-Little East player last year, and she must be replaced. (Senior) "Lauren Barber (Andover, MA/Andover HS) will be filling some big shoes in goal," said Jennings. "She has the size and the drive to be a good player."

After Monday's opener, UMass Dartmouth will head to Florida for their annual spring trip, playing Springfield and Clarkson during spring break. "We're looking for our recruits to balance our defense and attack, and we're excited about our prospects for the season," said Jennings. "We're looking forward to a great spring break trip, playing Springfield and Clarkson, two excellent teams. We are hoping for another successful season."
