Women's Soccer, Southern Maine Play 1-1, Double OT Tie
Junior Jillian Van Ness
GORHAM, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team and host Southern Maine exchanged goals barely three minutes apart in the second half, and the teams ended up in a 1-1, double over tie at Hannaford Field Saturday.
Junior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) put the Corsairs on the board when she converted a pass from sophomore forward Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, MA/Tri-County HS) in the 57th minute. Cathy Wise scored for Southern Maine in the 61st minute to tie the score.
"We moved the ball really well in the first half, we just couldn't put the ball in the net," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "It was 0-0 at halftime. In the second half, Erica sent Jillian in on a break, and they scored on a corner kick. Most of our shots were on net, we just couldn't get another goal."
The Corsairs outshot the Huskies, 23-11. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Borges (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) made six saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Kat Rothe made 15 saves for Southern Maine.
UMass Dartmouth is now 7-7-2 and 2-2-1 in the Little East Conference, while Southern Maine is 2-11-1 and 0-4-1 in the LEC. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Keene State next Saturday.
