NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team defeated visiting Nichols 3-0 on Saturday in a non-conference match at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs won their second straight home contest in style as junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) recorded her second shutout of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Maura Goncalves (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) opened the scoring in the 28th minute when she chipped the ball over Bison keeper Erica Casey (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor HS) from just outside the box. The Corsairs continued to press late in the first half, but were unable to capitalize as Casey made several diving saves.
Junior defender Kathleen Landers (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) scored her first goal of the season in the 61st minute when she converted a cross from junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS). Five minutes later senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) capped the scoring when she finished in the lower right hand corner off a cross from Goncalves.
"We had another full team effort today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "We've come so far at UMass Dartmouth and it's good to see our team playing well. The hard work is starting to pay off. We scored three times, but had plenty of other chances, our new players are working together well with our returners and it's good to see us playing so well this early in the season."
UMass Dartmouth outshot Nichols, 20-3. Chauvin made zero saves to pick up her second win of the season for the Corsairs and Casey had nine saves for the Bison.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-1 with the victory, while Nichols dropped to 1-2-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Nazarene Tuesday. The Bison will visit Wheelock Thursday.
